Several mornings each week I wake up at 5:00am and head to the gym for my workout. It’s about 3 kilometres (1.8 miles) from home – a 30-minute walk. Once at this gym, I do a 45-60 minute workout, before doing the return journey home.
I’ve been doing this for several years, and it’s definitely one of my better habits. There are many mornings when I could easily just stay in bed, but I know that going to the gym is physically the hardest thing I’ll have do all day.
So by getting it out of the way first – I ‘eat a live frog’ – and get on with the rest of my day.
Fact: The number one growth problem is not acquiring enough new business to drive growth. The primary cause is poor marketing habits.
For many professionals, marketing and selling are the most difficult tasks. Many procrastinate and never establish a set routine. This can be fatal for a business.
How to do the hard things first
Pick a method: Use referrals, warm emails, or networking. They all work. Just pick one, commit to it and master it.
Know your numbers: Determine the amount of marketing you need to do, in order to develop leads, set up appointments and secure clients to achieve your growth targets. Knowing your numbers keeps you motivated and your marketing then becomes a means to an end.
Establish a daily routine. Pick a time of day that works for you. For many professionals, first thing in the morning is a time that works really well. You can get the task out of the way and, if you have a win early, by acquiring a new lead or opportunity, it sets a positive tone for the rest of the day.
Put it on the calendar: You can choose to do a little each day, or choose a certain a day and time to focus on nothing else but marketing. Block out dedicated time, and treat it like a client appointment. Organise yourself. It can take as little as 15 minutes per day. I’ve helped many professionals to grow, using this method.

If you are an experienced professional, with a solid portfolio of clients, once you have your routine established you will need to spend as little as 15 minutes per day to maintain your rate of growth.
Every night before I go to bed I organise my gym clothes, so that I can be dressed and out the door within five minutes without having to think about it.
Establishing a marketing routine is the fastest way to grow your business, increase your profits and accelerate your career.
Top professionals who have established good marketing habits no longer have to think about it. They simply take action each day and produce superior growth results each year.
